Part I : Techniques I
3. Sweep Picking
Explaining this technique I must to start with master fusion guitarist Frank Gambale – the pioneer of the modern sweep picking playing. Frank changed the vision of playing based on sweep picking and he successfully incorporated his guitar style for jazz, fusion and rock.
Sweep picking gets its name from the sweeping action of the pick. Sweep picking licks are arranged so that the notes ascend from the lowest string to the highest one, or descend from the highest to lowest, basically one note-per- string. This allows you to play all downstrokes on the ascent and all upstrokes descent.Basically sweep picking is used for arpeggios and founds the economy picking. Very very important is to use muting on the strings when you play your sweeping licks!!!
Example 1 : Appropriate exercise for short arpeggios.
normal slow Example 2 : Similar to example 1.
Example 3 : Exercise for more difficult short arpeggios.
normal slow Example 4 : Basic exercise for series of arpeggios on the higher strings.
normal slow Example 5 : Basic exercise for series of arpeggios on the lower strings.
